These days, South Korea's salaried employees work an average two and one-half days overtime per week. When they do the night overtime, they should be compensated extra pay properly. However, according to the portal JobKorea, only 37.7 percent to the respondents get extra pay by a poll. Besides, more seriously, people think that it does not need to have the night shift bonus because of the nature of the work and industry, urgent tasks popping up unpredictably, and company culture.
Night overtime means working at 6 p.m. to the next day at 6 a.m. Normally, through the Labor Standards Act, office workers who work during this time have to be compensated one and half times of their original daily pay. However, most people do not notice this, and they just do the night overtime work because of the wrong awareness of the company culture. It becomes more serious.
Another problem of the night overtime is this. In accordance with WHO, World Health Organization, it said that night overtime must have been second level of carcinogen to a man in the prime of life. It is because those employees who do the night overtime are 23 percent more susceptible to disease because of the lack of melatonin, which control the sleep-triggering and immune system. If the melatonin is lacking, the immune system becomes strange.
After watching the poll, a lot of netizens and office workers who are not compensated properly demand the extra pay by standing their right. Also, they claim that it is not good to do the night overtime for people who are in the prime of life because they are too weak to do that. I hope many companies will compensate the extra pay more properly, too.
