Green Consumer Network in Korea and fourteen other environmental related civic organizations held a news conference about “Culture of safe food and acquisition of consumer rights” at Gwanghwamun Plaza on September 6. They urged the CEOs of Korean snack companies to guarantee consumer rights to choose the snacks that don’t contain eggs. They claimed that there is a right to choose processed foods which don’t use eggs for people who doesn’t wants to eat eggs and have allergy to them in advanced country.
Like this, now many people have a fear of eggs. Recently, the word “Eggphobia” is created. The word “Eggphobia” means a fear of eggs, which shows us how much the fear has increased.
Due to Eggphobia, many people avoid buying eggs and egg-containing food such as bread, snacks, and ice-cream. Therefore, the sales of them have declined very much. According to E-mart, the number of customers that purchased eggs is declined about 43% on August 19 compared to that last week. Some large bakeries’ sales have also dropped about 20%. As a result, many markets decreased the prices of eggs. Three big markets, E-mart, Homeplus, and Lotte Mart lowered the price of eggs to 5,000 won. Some meals with eggs’ sales in restaurants are also dropped so they have changed differently. For example, the egg toppings are substituted for other toppings and some meals with eggs are on sale.
