The G20 summit was held in Hamburg, Germany. It lasted for two days, from July 7th to July 8th. The G20 countries are the top 20 countries in the world with major economies, and the issues discussed in the G20 summit meetings vary from time to time.

Some of the major issues discussed in the G20 summit in Germany were climate change, migration, terrorism, and others. At the same time, thousands of protesters filled the streets of Hamburg.

Fifty thousand protesters showed up to express their various opinions and their dissatisfaction on how the G20 countries were reacting to problems around the world. They stated that it was not right that a few countries decide how the whole world should solve problems, and that the G20 countries should discuss how to solve problems with other countries around the world and not just by themselves. Some protestors were worried about the climate change, and other terrorisms. Around midnight, anti capitalist protesters set bonfires, destroyed property and looted shops. German Police reacted aggressively by wearing full riot gear, spraying the protesters with water cannons and tear gas.

Protest organizers stated that they would storm police barricades around the restricted areas after the police tried to prevent protesters from disturbing the meetings.

Protests got out of hand when masked protesters set fire to cars, and threw rocks to police and windows of banks and shops. There were 15,000 police officers dispatched to the city after the violence escalated. One protester said, “The point is to disturb the G20, and it is not right that a few countries get to decide what will happen to the rest of the world.” The German chancellor who was hosting the event, Angela Merkel, condemned the violence. She said, “I have every understanding for peaceful demonstrations, but violent demonstrations put human lives in danger.”. Melania Trump, the first lady, was reportedly stopped from attending an event hosted by the G20 because of the protests.

Her spokesman stated, “Police officers have not given us security clearance to leave the guest house.”. A total of 213 officers were injured, 114 people were arrested and 89 were in custody.

The rest of the world should not just ignore the protesters but listen to their opinions, and people around the world have to cooperate with each other in order to prevent further conflicts
