President Moon Jae-in took office formally as the 19th president of South Korea on May 10.
On the following morning of the May 9 presidential election, the National Election Commission announced Moon’s victory.
His five-year term started immediately after the confirmation without any transitional period, due to the nation’s special political situation -- the leadership vacuum resulted from the historical impeachment of former president Park Geun-hye.
As his first official schedule of the day, Moon visited Seoul National Cemetery at around 10 a.m. to pay respects, following the usual first move of newly elected presidents.
He then arrived at National Assembly in Seoul to visit each of the parties and make the presidential vow.
In the afternoon, Moon made nominations for the key government posts and named presidential aides.
He nominated South Jeolla Province Gov. Lee Nack-yon for prime minister and Seo Hun for the head of National Intelligence Service.
He named Im Jong-seok for his chief of staff and Ju Young-hoon for his chief of security.
Moon won the election with 13,423,800 votes (41.1 percent). Candidate Hong Jun-pyo of Liberty Korea party came in second with 24.0 percent while Ahn Cheol-soo of People’s Party followed with 21.4 percent.
Yoo Seung-min of the Baruen Party got 6.8 percent of approval rating, while Sim Sang-jeong of the Justice Party got 6.2 percent.
