Songpyeon
is a traditional rice cake which is usually eaten in Korea during Chuseok, one
of the biggest holidays in Korea. Its shape is like a half-moon and has a
filling made of red bean, soybean, and chestnut.
Songpyeon is usually steamed with pine needles, so it has a delicate scent
of pine needles.
Songpyeon
has various types.
The
first one is five color songpyeon. Like its name, it has five colors like pink,
yellow, purple, green, and white. It is the most common type of songpyeon. This
type of songpyeon is eaten at the party which celebrates a baby’s 100th day
after birth.
The
second is potato songpyeon. Potato songpyeon is made of potato starch. So,
potato songpyeon is translucent and chewy. This songpyeon is usually eaten in
Gangwon-do, which produces many potatoes.
The
third is pumpkin songpyeon. Because it contains pumpkin, it has a bright amber
color and a sweet-savory flavor.
The
fourth is ramie songpyeon. Ramie songpyeon is usually eaten in Jeonlla-do.
Because of the ramie, it is chewy and does not harden easily.
The
fifth is flower songpyeon. Flower songpyeon is decorated with many colors of the flower made of rice paste. Because flower songpyeon is fancy and colorful, it
is usually used in ancestral rites.
