Jeju Island, created by volcanic activity that began about 1.8 million years ago, has unique volcanic topographies. There are 160 lava caves and 370 oreums in Jeju Island. Oreum is a small and big volcano, located in and around the biggest one. And it is also called parasitic volcano by people. In commemoration of the 10th Geomunoreum International tracking, I am going to introduce Geomunoreum.

Geomunoreum International tracking was held from July 20 to July 28. Since it is the special opportunity that comes only once a year, I visited Geomunoreum. Before going into Geomunoreum, you have to get a pass. In order to track Geomunoreum, we were not allowed to bring an umbrella and stick. Many people who got passes looked like wondering why we have to get a pass. It was because Geomunoreum is the world natural heritage. If we bring umbrella or stick, they may herm trees or flowers that are designated as endangered species in the Geomunoreum.

Geomunoreum is 456 meter high and also forms a lava tube system. It is the one and the only oreum that is designated as UNESCO World Natural Heritage in Jeju Island, because many endangered species are living there, and also it has high geological values. When I visited Geomunoreum, I could see red soil. It was made from a volcanic eruption. According to an academic study on Jeju Island's natural heritage, Geomunoreum is more special than all other oreums in Jeju Island. This is because there are many endangered species there. They are stag beetles, Jeju grape fern, Akebian fruit orchid, etc.

Especially, Geomunoreum’s magma created many volcanic landscapes and lava caves. Lava caves are totally 13 km long. And we call it Geomunoreum lava tube System. The longest lava cave, Manjanggul is 7.4km in length. I visited Manjanggul too. It was cool and the water was dropping from the ceiling. There were distinct vestiges on the wall, that were created by Geomunoreum’s magma flow a long time ago

All of these are on Jeju Island. As 10 percents of Jeju Island is the world natural heritage, we have to protect them to leave the world natural beautiful heritage to our descendants.
