Before, in Seoul, world-famous macarons represented by Ladurée and Pierre Herme leading the trend remained firmly. Recently, Fatcaron has been gaining attention in the dessert market. Fatcaron is a neologism of the abbreviated words "fat macaron" that refers to a form of thick filling, unlike a regular macaron.
Fatcaron was created by combining the Korean society's dessert and snack culture, which values satiety and boasts a generous population, with the popularity of certified photographs through social media and the search for the enjoyable elements. The macaron was first made in Italy and spread by France. Then, there is another kind of macaron that originated in South Korea. Made in South Korea, Fatcaron is poised to surpass the popularity of the original macarons. Fatcaron is popular among young women in their 20s and 30s making it lead in the dessert market. Its various colors and different thicknesses affect the visual stimuli of the people. As the pretty Fatcaron was certified on social media, it spread rapidly.
Recently, Fatcaron products with whole raw fruit or cookies and crackers are also in the markets to make the filling more abundant. Also, various types of macaron are being released one after another, including hamburger with ham and cheese and injeolmi with been powder. With the effort of small merchants to appeal this dessert to the public, Fatcaron continues to evolve.
On the other hand, there are also negative opinions about Fatcaron. Critics said that it is a dessert of unknown nationality that was produced by Instagram trend. Also, there is someone that stated an opinion that is was not intended for eating but a dessert for taking pictures because of the deformed design that lost the taste and shape of the original macaron.
