On May 29th, a cruise ship carrying many South Koreans sank. The cruise ship sank in the Danube River in Budapest, Hungary. The Herblenian cruise ship, which was operating on Budapest's Danube River, sank after colliding with another cruise ship. There was a total of 35 passengers aboard the cruise ship, with 33 of them Koreans. At least seven of the 33 passengers on board were killed and 19 others went missing. Seven were fortunately rescued.

South Korea's Foreign Minister, Kang Kyung-wha, was dispatched to the prefecture on May 30th to direct the search and rescue. However, due to the rapid increase in the current and heavy rain, the ship quickly sank from the rising water level of the Danube River. Moon Jae-in, the South Korean president, held an emergency meeting at Cheong Wa Dae to cooperate with Hungary to expedite the search effort for the missing persons. Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon was said to have provided rescue for the search and recovery of the bodies and funeral and psychological counseling services.

There was also a story of heroism that came out of this tragic accident. At the time of the cruise ship's sinking, Captain Rupp Emyoke of the Ulam cruise ship received a radio transmission from another ship and threw out life jackets to save two passengers from drowning. The captain said he was worried that the drowning men could be sucked under the boat, so he couldn't get close and so he just threw life jackets. The city said it would give the captain a plaque of thanks, but the captain refused to accept it.

Movie star Josh Brolin expressed condolences to the victims on SNS. Josh Brolin is the actor who played the villain, Thanos, in the Avengers series. On May 31, he posted the Korean and Hungarian flags on his SNS and left messages expressing condolences to all the victims of the cruise ship disaster in Budapest, Hungary.

Citizens hope the rescuers will rescue all the missing and that the survivors will continue to stay healthy and that the bereaved families will never lose hope. It is also hoped that many people will learn more from the incident, comfort the bereaved families and pay tribute to the victims.
