Italy believes that the reduction of araments will weaken the arms race and affect non-proliferation of weapons and contribute to world peace. Italy has made great efforts to contribute to world peace as a result of its disarmament, as above. Italy made its contribution to the joint UN/OPCW multilateral operation that safely and securely transported and destroyed Syrian chemical agents, providing the UN-OPCW Joint Mission with in-kind and financial assistance.
Also, we made a voluntary contribution to the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe project on regional implementation of UNSCR 1540.
While these efforts are important, Italy has judged that the role of educational institutions is also important. Therefore, much effort has been made, such as providing financial support to educational institutions or participating in educational programs. The fact that Italy promoted the Nuclear Security Summit Gift Basket on “Nuclear Security Training and Support Centres,” in support of the work of the Centres of Excellence in enhancing nuclear security worldwide in the nuclear field can be a representative example.
Also, Italy established the International School on Nuclear Security at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, which trains professionals from third countries in the international legal framework on nuclear security. And also, in a similar context to education, Italy has conducted several chemical security programs in collaboration with the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), whose inspectors are often trained at Italian CBRN Defence Centres.
The importance of education and training programmes can no longer be ignored, as updates of regular education and training programmes are expected to be effective in reducing arms and further contribute to world peace, so that the nations and international organizations can effectively face the danger of weapons of mass destruction.
