Samsung SDS AI & Data Analytics, a team composed of Samsung SDS developer, won in the AIIDE Starcraft AI tournament in Canada for the first time. The competition was hosted by the AI International Association for Interactive Digital Entertainment who picked a winner with the highest winning rate in a three-week league match among AI robots. Twenty-seven teams from around the world participated in this year's event, including Facebook, which won the SSCAIT contest last year, and Stanford University and Locutus, the winners of the 2018 CIG. Many experts predicted that the Stanford University team or the Facebook team would be the winner. However, the Samsung SDS team beat Facebook and Stanford University and won the championship with 2484 wins, 106 losses, and 96 percent win in ten different maps from the end of October until last week.
Starcraft is a strategic simulation game which consists of three races called Zerg, Terran and Protoss. Cider team used Terran, and they quickly grasped the enemy's strategy and chose an optimal timing for attack and defense. The team leader Bae said that as humans, they actively responded to each other's strategies and attacked their opponents at an optimum timing, and they have developed AI bot that can control detailed units.
The team has also participated in the SSCAIT competition since late October and is currently ranked first in the league. They will play the tournament with the top 16 teams in January next year after winning the championship. The team's game video is also popular as it was introduced in a weekly YouTube report published by the SSCAIT operator. Some overseas netizens responded by saying that it was totally different from other robots they have seen before and South Korea dominated Starcraft again. They believe that this will be a great opportunity to show the level of technology of South Korea.
