▲ Traditional Korean musical instrument drum, Buk

Do you know about janggu and danso?

Janggu is made by putting a horse skin on two large casks. Then, danso is made of bamboo that is a Korean notched, end-blown vertical bamboo flute used in Korean folk music.

When you play janggu, you use a thick stick on the left, while the right is a thin one. A thin stick is made of bamboo. Janggu was used in Samul-Nori and Jongmyo Jerye, which is still handed down today. Janggu beats a rhythm in Samul-

Nori with “book”, “kkwaenggwari“ and “jing”.  Janggu is a percussion instrument representing the Korean drum system, and its use has been widely used, ranging from folk music to dance music. The danso is one of the musical instruments played vertically. It has the same shape as a Western recorder, and it is popular. The danso was played in a clear tone, and it was played alone, not in Samul-Nori or Pungmul-nori. Although it is difficult to play unlike other instruments, it is easy for anyone to play the danso. For this reason, There are types of trees used to make the Danso, yellow bamboo and dark bamboo. Making is known to be as easy as playing.

▲ Korean traditional musical instrument Gayageum playing

Next, “Buk“ and ”Gayageum“ are traditional musical instruments that represent our country. Gayageum is one of the most loved instruments by Koreans. It is usually played by hand by tearing or bouncing silk, tilting it on the floor, using the three fingers of the right hand to tear the cord, to make a snap, or to shake the left. The sound of Gayageum is soft and beautiful, and its fine color and soft melody soothes people's mind. Another musical instrument, “buk”, is a percussion instrument used other traditional Korean instruments and can be compared to drums in the West. The “buk” is an instrument that uses a hand or a stick to make sounds by tightly pinching leather on either side an empty wooden barrel. It has been used in many ways, including pansori, and playing folk song. There is a difference between Pansori and Pungmul-Nori. When the singer of Pansori uses the buk, he places it in a sitting position so that the drum slightly shifts to the left. When Koreans perform Pungmul-nori, we put a string on the drum, put it on the left shoulder and hold the drum on our right hand. Although it is not often seen now, it is a culture that must be cherished and liked.
