In a high school in Ulsan, students in Lee's class do something different, compared to their behaviors in other teacher's classes. They talk in pairs and Lee just stands and wait in front of them. After a while, students start to talk in groups. When all these talks finished, Lee starts to ask them about what was the question in the group and organize all contents of a class. This education method may seem to be peculiar, but this is a rising student-centered education method, Havruta.
The student-centered class is not a one-way knowledge transfer class of teachers, but rather a class that discusses and announces the needs and interests felt directly by students. In this way, students can get a useful education as well as learn the curriculum by experiencing and participating directly. Also, in this type of class, educator's ability is stressed because they have a responsibility to give students many chances to participate in class. Since it can make students to be creative, it is rising nowadays. And, there are many kinds of student-centered education: PMI, pyramid debate, flipped learning, and Havruta.
Havruta education which comes from the Hebrew word " Haber, " which means a friend, is a traditional method of debating and exchanging questions with students. The foundation of Havruta education is that students learn from each other as an equal friend through questions, dialogue, discussion, arguments, and answer exploration between friends, unlike existing question-answer method which is occurred between teacher and students. In the process of finding answers to various questions from the other person, imagination, creativity, and thinking skills are enhanced, and plus, discussion and communication skills are also enhanced. And, the best reason why educators use this method is that students never doze when they participate in classes in this way.
Not many educators use Havruta since it is not that famous yet in Korea. However, educators who use this method are continuously increasing as it helps students grow creativity and thinking skill. In Lee's class, students become creative and satisfy that they never doze in classes.
